Date: June 3-5, 2027
Location: Gardiner Museum, Toronto

Care has become increasingly central to how museums and galleries describe their relationships with artists, communities, audiences, and one another. But what happens when care moves from being just a statement of values to a way of working? What structures, practices, and relationships does care actually require, and who is responsible for making it possible? This conference will unravel the assumptions built into institutional care, and confront the burden of care work and accountability that extends beyond frontline staff.

We will look at examples of hyperlocal and community-led practices that build trust from the ground up. We will explore care embedded in structures and practices that shape the ways we work with communities, develop programs, share authority, and navigate difficult conversations. At the same time, we will turn the question inward. What does it mean to care for the people who do this work? How might institutions move toward practices that balance the weight of the workload with the well-being of their workers?

Through conversations, site visits, and hands-on sessions, GAME 2027 brings together educators, artists, and community partners to explore the many ways care shapes our work. What changes when we begin to examine this care: how it is practiced, where it is held, who carries it, and what structures sustain or constrain it?
